Hailing from Pyeongchang, he was a novelist and scholar of English literature, with pen name of Gasan.
He graduated from elementary school in Pyeongchang, attended Gyeongseong Jeil High School, and eventually graduated from the department of English literature of Gyeongseong Jeguk University (currently Seoul National University) in 1930. He took a job at the police inspection department bureau with Chongdokbu (the Japanese colonial regime installed in Korea), but shortly quit it.
He then went to her wife´s hometown at Gyeongseong, North Hamgyeong Provice to become an English teacher at Gyeongseong Agricultural School.
He was active as a literary man until he died on May 25, 1942.
As in 1928, he published a short story titled ‘City and’Ghost’ in the “Joseonjigwang” magazine. He captured the attention of the literary world as a communist revolutionary theories-sympathetic writer. Afterwards, he published novels titled ‘Brittle Red light’, ‘Noryeong Coast’, ‘Messenger from the North Pole’ and ‘Mah-jong philosophy’.
As in 1933, he formed Guinhoe (the nine member association) manifesting pure literature Together with Jeong Ji-yong, Kim Gi-rim, Lee Tae-jun and so on, he shed ideology-oriented writings, and shifted to native-tinged works with natural backgrounds such as ‘Pig’ and ‘Rooster’.
He published works written in essay style and interacting with nature,: ‘Mountain’, ‘Field’, etc. (1934); ‘When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom’ (1936,); and afterwards ‘Rose’Becomes Sick’, ‘Flowerpot’, etc. These works smack of western atmosphere.
A novelist representing the 1930s, he contrasts and blends sex with the mystery of nature, and forms subject matter in refined and lyrical language, thus evoking artistic emotion. His works likewise are highly evaluated.
